What to expect at your first nephrology appointment
A first visit to a kidney specialist is a chance to understand why you were referred and build a practical plan. You do not need to understand every laboratory number before arriving. Bring your questions and the information that helps explain your health history.
Prepare the information you already have
Check the Patient Center for the practice's current forms and visit instructions. Bring your medication list, including doses, supplements and over-the-counter products. A written list is useful even if you also bring medication bottles.
If available, collect recent and older kidney blood tests, urine results, imaging reports and hospital discharge information. Earlier results can help show whether a change is recent or longstanding. Your referring office can use the Referral Center to review the practice's requirements and send records through the existing referral pathway.
Bring any home blood-pressure readings you already record, plus a short list of symptoms and questions. Call the office if you are unsure which records or forms are needed.
Understand the reason for referral
A nephrologist evaluates kidney function and problems such as chronic kidney disease, protein in the urine, difficult-to-control blood pressure, fluid balance and electrolyte abnormalities. The visit may include discussion of your medical history, medicines and test results. Further testing depends on what the assessment shows.
Two common tests are eGFR, which estimates kidney filtration, and uACR, which measures albumin in urine. They provide different information, so ask what each result means for you.
Leave with clear next steps
Useful questions include: What is the likely cause of my kidney problem? What do we still need to clarify? When should I have follow-up tests? Should my medicines or diet change? Who should I contact if symptoms change?
Before leaving, make sure you understand the follow-up plan and how results will be communicated. Do not change treatment solely because of general information you read online.
Choose the right office
Kidney Associates of Texas has patient offices in McKinney and Sherman. The Sherman office serves patients from Denison, Grayson County and the Texoma region, including nearby southern Oklahoma. Confirm your office when scheduling. Telehealth is available; call to discuss whether it fits your visit.
